Abstract:

Transcript of interview (2 copies) with Mary Harter and Jane Murray, in San Francisco, January 23, 1997 about Cyril and Virginia Smith and the town of Merced in the early 1900s. The Cyril Smith Trust and Virginia Smith Trust lands were donated for UC Merced. Transcript of interview (2 copies) with Elinor and Keith Shaffer, Betty Lou George, Skip George, Lyn George, Dan Aldrich, J. Roger Samuelsen, Bob Carpenter, Ken Riggs, Jim Erickson, Carol Tomlinson-Keasy, in Merced, May 15, 2000. The group discusses the Smith family, Merced history, and recollections of negotiations regarding Merced and the University of California. Also included is correspondence regarding the project and background material on UC Merced.
